Regular lawn mowings with a sharp mower blade, at the proper height, will help keep your grass growing vigorously and maintain adequate density. Proper mowing practices contribute to a healthy lawn with minimal weeds. Schmitz Property Services typically recommends a 3" mowing height. Also, if you leave some grass clippings on your lawn it can help contribute to your lawns nutrition.

Lawn Fertilization
Healthy Lawns Start With Proper Fertilization
Lawns use fertilizer to look their best and stay healthy, but it is critical to fertilize correctly. The best fertilization schedule for lawn care depends on the type of grass, climate, and soil conditions in your area. However, in general, the following fertilization schedule is what Schmitz Property Services recommends.
Early Spring: Apply a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen to encourage new growth and green-up the lawn. This should be done when the soil temperature reaches around 55°F (13°C). Consider using a pre-emergent crabgrass preventer if you will not have any new grass seeding done.
(Apply in April for Southern Minnesota)

Late Spring: Apply a fertilizer that contains a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to support root growth, promote color, and help the grass withstand heat stress. This should be done around 4-6 weeks after the first fertilization or when the grass is green and growing.
(Apply in May for Southern Minnesota)

Summer: Apply a slow-release fertilizer that contains nitrogen to help the grass maintain its color and health during hot weather. This should be done at the beginning of summer, around 4-6 weeks after the second fertilization.
(Apply in June for Southern Minnesota)

Early Fall: Apply a fertilizer that is high in potassium to help the grass build up its root system before winter. This should be done around 8-10 weeks before the first expected frost date in your area.

Late Fall: Apply a winterizer fertilizer that is high in potassium and phosphorus to help the grass store nutrients for winter dormancy. This should be done around 4-6 weeks before the first expected frost date in your area.

It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific fertilizer you are using and to water the lawn thoroughly after applying fertilizer to help it absorb the nutrients. Additionally, regular mowing, aeration, over seeding, weed control and soil testing can all help to maintain a healthy and beautiful lawn.

Over seeding lawns is the process of spreading grass seed evenly over an existing lawn and or slit seeding it into an existing lawn. When the process is done correctly it will help to maintain a lawn that is lush, thick and green. Schmitz Property Services recommends over seeding in the fall approximately 45 days before the first average frost. Spring is also a good time to over seed lawns however you will not be able to apply weed & feed products; the pre-emergent herbicides inhibit seed germination. Applying a starter fertilizer after over seeding is recommended and will deliver essential nutrients for the new seedlings. Phosphorus supports vigorous root growth, while nitrogen fuels top growth and greening. Newly over seeded lawns need consistent moisture. The seed and soil must remain moist for the best germination. Frequent, light waterings two to three times a day for the first five days is recommended; water more heavily every other day for the next five days; then water as needed to prevent any wilting. This will encourage deep, healthy roots for your new seedlings, along with your current existing lawn.
